Yet another of these notes from complete strangers to say thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for making More available again, for energising the whole vintage software movement, for setting up the outliners discussion (part of my day now - roll on the listserv version…), and for all the fabulous products you’ve come up with over the years to revolutionise the way we work. As someone who’s been known, in the absence of anything better, to create presentations with the *save-disabled demo* of More 3.0 (not as barmy as it sounds; you can save a default chart layout in the preferences, and just import a tabbed text outline created in another outliner, such as the excellent outline module in Symantec’s own lamented GreatWorks), I’ve been a very, very happy man the last couple of weeks.

A couple of small contributions by way of thanks:

1. I’ve converted the More 3.x refcard to HTML. You can find it at http://www.rhbnc.ac.uk/Classics/NJL/more3ref.html.

2. Nobody else seems to have pointed this out, but the list of new features in More 3.1 copied from the ReadMe is actually the list of new features in 3.0 - the 3.1 ReadMe is maddeningly unclear on this. The actual list of what changed between 3.0 and 3.1 can be found in the More 3.1 Enhancements supplement to the 3.0 manual, and in the slideshow that comes with the 3.1 package. Here’s the summary from the opening paragraph of the manual supplement:

MORE 3.1 is compatible with System 7.0 and takes advantage of many of the System 7.0 features including TrueType™, Virtual Memory, and Balloon Help.
Other MORE 3.1 features include:
•Interruptible screen refreshing in Bullet Chart View
•Movable modal dialog boxes
•Ability to clear rules from multiple headlines
•Upward shadows

- and here’s the version from the slideshow, exactly as it appears! (No, I don’t know what “.The takes a portion of the hard disk” ought to say either…)

What’s new in MORE Version 3.1?
Virtual Memory Support
.The takes a portion of the hard disk and uses it as Random Access Memory (RAM).  This means that a hard disk will give the user a larger amount of RAM.
Aliases
This allows the user to select a file and create an icon that contains the path information to get to the original file.
Balloon Help
This allows the user to place the cursor on certain locations, menus, commands, dialog boxes, tool palettes, and be able to bring up a balloon that contains an explanation of the item.
TrueType Fonts
These are fonts that will give a better representation of the fonts both on the screen and when printed.  They improve the quality of the fonts.
Movable Modal Dialogs
This will allow the user to relocate dialog boxes when working on a smaller monitor (i.e. Classic, Plus) and make better use of the screen area.
Interruptible drawing in Bullet Chart view
The ability to interupt drawing or screen refresh in Bullet Chart view will save time, especially for users working with gradients, or detailed bullet charts.
Clear rules from multiple headlines
It is now possible to simultaneously clear rules from multiple headlines, and do it on contiguous or non-contiguous headlines.

Thanks again, and all the best -
Nick Lowe.
