I have yet to put it through any paces, but I came across a clever, cheap ($10) freeform database with outlining.(http://www.metalgrass.com/karteset/karteset.html)

The well-rehearsed problem with hierarcic databases is their categorical rididity. Karteset combines approaches based on hierarchy and key words by permitting nested discriptors.
