I would like to suggest one other application. Though it is not a PIM or even, strictly speaking, an outliner, The Journal is the best writing environment I’ve found. Its main function is generating a daily journal in which to keep a diary, but you can create any number of “notebooks” in which to store writing projects. Like most of the hierarchical PIMs we discuss on this site, The Journal allows you to create an outline of your work, though this is fairly clunky compared with some of the software that Steve mentions. Still, it isn’t difficult. The editor pane is very good, with all the important editing features, as well as a spell check and thesaurus. So I guess what I’m saying is that if you want a good writing program that provides hierarchical organization (outlining) of your work, The Journal is a great choice. If you put more emphasis on the outlining, then one of the choices that Steve Cohen mentions would probably be better. The web site is http://www.davidrm.com/thejournal/
