Steve Z,

I haven’t fully committed to anything yet.  Right now I sometimes use MyBase (http://www.wjjsoft.com) as a quick way of saving Web pages with graphics.  I usually try to save Web pages with graphics in .mht format.  However, that doesn’t always work.  If I don’t want the graphics, I just save a page in .htm format.

MyBase appends the url to the page which is a nice feature.  MyBase cannot at present print an entire tree with graphics, but can print individual Web pages that are in the file.  As far as I can tell, web pages saved in MyBase are saved & compressed in the main MyBase file, as are other “attachments” in its “third” window.

I have not used MyBase for anything else as yet although the entire $50 package has some interesting looking add-ins.

To date, I have found nothing in Windows as useful as GrandView.  I still use GV occasionally.  In fact, as I haven’t yet found the “perfect PIM,” I use several PIMs for different tasks.  Over the years I’ve bought some that I’ve discarded, either because they were too clunky to use or were too buggy.  The rest I use as described below:

Ecco:  Daily diary/planner, bookmark and file/folder shortcut keeper.  (It’s a pretty poor outliner.)

Inspiration (http://www.inspiration.com):  Use its outliner to create diagrams and also to convert GV files into Windows “format.”

Jot+ (http://www.kingstairs.com): This is my main PIM for purely text info.  Some day Jot+ will accept graphics (it’s presently in the Alpha-3 graphics version and someday Michael will finish.) It is very easy to use, but as with ALL the tree-based PIMs I’ve tried, reorganizing the tree could be easier.

Maple Pro (http://www.crystaloffice.com): This is what I had been using for material that included both text and graphics, but I may switch to MyBase for that purpose.  Don’t know yet.

WinOrganizer (formerly called Golden Section) (http://www.tgslabs.com): I’ve also used this to store text+graphic info.  It has a “pleasing” screen interface.

NoteMap: Use this very occasionslly as an outliner.  They promised a new version, but so far not.

Zoot (http://www.zootsoftware.com): I bought it some time ago, but haven’t really used it because: I don’t need its special functionality (similar to Agenda’s and GV’s Categories/Assignments) and it’s a bit of work to set it up to make best use of that functionality.

TreePad Business (http://www.treepad.com):  I started with TreePad years ago, but its development stalled for a while, so I switched to Jot+.  I’ve just started playing with the Business Edition.  It will accept graphics, but presently saves them in a separate file.  (Each tree requires 2 files.) Henk promises that eventually there will be an edition that has a single combined file.

KeyNote is free and worth considering.

I’d probably splurge on InfoSelect except that it still doesn’t have subscripts, superscripts or RTF-3.  (My Ph.D. is in math & I do a lot of statistics.)

To keep some kind of order with this menagerie of PIMs I make liberal use of shortcuts, keep files related to a specific subject in the same folder, and use the Searchopia text search engine (http://www.sunrizen.com).

Since all of the PIMs I presently use are still undergoing refinement, one or more may some day fulfill all of my needs, although I’ll probably be long retired and too decrepit to care by then.
