The sorry truth is that each of the various programs has its own strengths and weaknesses—and none of them can do it all. For organizing and retrieving e-mail, Web page info and other straight text, I use Zoot (http://www.zootsoftware.com). For distributing hierarchical data I use the freeware version of Treepad because it is free and easy for people to use—I work at a college and have a Treepad file of all our course descriptions broken out by subject, and I can send this to anyone on campus who needs this information. For storing and retrieving documents in which I need to keep the formatting, I use AskSam—not the most elegant software, but useable. And when I need an outliner for composing copy, I use NoteMap. It sure would be nice to have one program that did it all, but that doesn’t appear to be on the horizon soon.

I did notice that one of the scriptwriting applications now has an outline functio. It’s called Story View, I believe. I haven’t tried it myself, so I don’t know how well it works.

Steve Z.
