Well, as always, the answer is “depends what you want to do.”

I wind up using Appleworks quite a lot, but it’s missing a lot of key MORE features (cloning, hoisting, math, calendar). On the other hand, it has the main outlining functions, and smoothly integrates into my other files. It also has built-in spelling, thesaurus, and the like. I got to noodling around into some of the formats for the outlines, and made a stationary file that suits me pretty well. Like a lot of the old Claris software, Appleworks is a middleweight: not really designed for heavy duty anything, but an elegant collection of the functions you actually use.

It’s been a while since I used Inspiration, but it seemed to me that it felt a great deal like MORE. It also has, unlike most outliners, that graphic view. If you need that, Inspiration is probably your best choice.

BrainForest is a palm application (with both Windows and Mac desktop versions), so it’s pretty stripped down. But it’s highly portable to the Palm, which is it’s main value to me.

ILiner and OmniOutliner are both pretty interesting newcomers. I haven’t delved into either of them real far. But the good news is, outliners seem to be making the transition into emerging software. No doubt THIS site is a contributing factor.

If you’re like me, you’ll try ‘em all, trying to find just the right mix.
