With multiple columns you can put arguments and counterarguments side by side.
You can add a third dimension to your outline a la speaker notes in More.
You can fit more document on a page by expanding into some horizontal space what you’d otherwise see vertically.
You can do some column work in your favorite outliner.

These things might be useful, and there might be other uses.
