One of my recent sweeps of latest developments in the Mac App Store has revealed a newcomer in the personal wiki space.

It’s always fun when another personal wiki application comes along, and this one - currently Mac only - is a rather nice example of the genre.

The developer is French (although his English appears to be excellent), and it’s called Start & Doc. It can be found on the Mac App Store, but will shortly also be available as a free evaluation version which can be downloaded directly from his website (or from the Mac App Store, as you wish).

It’s still lacking a couple of things (such as a universal search function, although it does have a page search function), but he’s been kind enough to outline his roadmap, which includes the ability to export in multiple formats, and to share pages to specific apps (e.g. Mail, iMessage, Reminders, Notes etc.). Plus, of course, the requisite search function.

I’ve actually splashed out for it, and it’s very nicely designed; an interesting alternative to classics like VoodooPad. I’m hoping Éric will develop an iOS version as well; that’s a sine qua non in the Mac world, I feel.

More details on his website at https://start-and-doc.com (please note that the freebie version isn’t available just yet, but will be out shortly).

Cheers,
Bill

Wow.  I shelled out for the AppStore version when it first came out, used it for 10 minutes, then put it aside with no interest in touching it again.  It’s far far away from a VoodooPad replacement, in my opinion.  Start-and-Doc is a bit of a mess.

No Windows version, either - but there’s a Linux version ‘in progress”. If he’s going to stick with just one platform, Mac, then he ought to work on the IOS version (as the original poster wrote) rather than go harebrained into Linux.

Hello,

I’m Eric, the only developer of Start & Doc.

First of all, I want to say that S&D is the very first application I make for commercial purposes, so yes, it’s a bit a of mess and mostly a lot of work, thank you for your support.

Know that a lot of features will be added to the application, the universal search but also advanced export functions (DocX, HTML, PNG/JPG, the possibility to visualize a page separator for the A4 format directly in the editor, bring many pages in one PDF set and more), the themed templates will also come up with the next update (and the ability to customize a theme), the editor will have some extra functions (positioning blocks of text, diagram and charts rendering, i will also rework the spellchecker by adding word replacement and an option for autocomplete tips. I will also add a way to navigate more easily from one page to another.

The reason the linux version is posted on the website is that it is already complete, it will be completely free but as things are never simple, I need to create a license to be able to distribute it.

Also, today i just started working on the iOS version, it will include the new features described above and that’s when I add them to the MacOS version. Android and Windows version will be done after that.

All ideas and advices are welcome, it allows me to move forward in the design of the application and make it better.

Regards,
Eric

Hi, Eric,

I like Start & Doc very much. It is easy to use, but a powerful note manager already. I like how you can insert a table of contents into any note. I am looking forward to future developments.
