Have you guys seen this application called outline:http://outline.ws/.
I was curious. it is very strange kind of application. I syncs with Onenote; totally the same form and structure with Onenote.  but, adds little additional functionalities; barely any.

Onenote is free application. I really wonder who spends time developing the same thing; and hopes to make money.

I find this application very weird.

Have you seen it?

Outline came out before there was a OneNote for Mac, with the pitch that it could open and edit ON files. They have managed to keep it going even after ON arrived on the platform, because Outline has a few advantages over ON. On a Mac, the ON file is 426 mega bites, while Outline is just 42 mega bites. On iOS, ON is 170 mb to Outlines 52 mb (or something like that).

To use OneNote free you have to store your notes on Microsofts OneDrive. Outline can use any cloud service, or even locally to store your files.

I’m not saying those are compelling reasons to use Outline instead of ON for everyone. But for some people, sure.

I see. I didn’t think about that one. Right, I can see now why the want to keep going on.

The other special thing that Outline does is import Circus Ponies Notebook files, which is a boon to CPN refugees like me.

I started using Outline when it first came out because the Mac version of OneNote was so crippled - not only no local storage, but at the time, no file attachments. It’s been a bit buggy from time to time, but the developer’s very active. When I started, it was IOS-only but the Mac version is now pretty good. The syncing is very nice. If you want a Mac version of OneNote or a replacement for Circus Ponies, it’s not bad at all - and, I think, very reasonably price.

I don’t use it so much now - I’ve gradually switched to a combination of DevonThink, Curio and Tinderbox

I started using it on my iPad when it first came out (because there was no OneNote for iOS or the Mac at that time). As an alternate lightweight version of OneNote it was an ok app. I was excited when MS ported OneNote to Mac & iOS and started using it heavily. But as time passed, I realized that OneNote for Mac would never keep ups with the Windows version and no local file storage finally killed the deal for me.

I never tried Outline for the Mac. I would give it a try but I’m also concerned about the longevity of the developer.

Also, I bit the bullet and purchased DEVONThink Pro as it seems to be the best alternative, right now, for my OneNote addiction.  Of course the day after I purchased DEVONThink, this software crossed my RSS reader   http://reinventedsoftware.com/keepit/  ... ha!
