Please post things you wish the forum would do (or do differently) in this thread.

there was something I really wanted but now I can't remember quite what it was ...
you might want to improve the search function - to give us the ability to narrow down searches a bit - search by author, search by title.
maybe a a "files area" for uploading stuff - screenshots

As mentioned earlier, making it easy to attach screenshots would be nice. Cheers.

I would like both the above enhancements, but what I would like most, as an unreconstructed tinkerer, is the ability to go back and edit my most recent post (or, even possibly, posts).

I would be also interested in a word cloud. That might be one quick way to navigate and the dominant themes would become visible.

My own main interest is the one I recently mentioned, to have a "related posts" functionality.
Given the substantial legacy of previous years it should be something that can be applied automatically to older posts. Some ideas:
- Building on Chris' idea: (manually) create an online list of applications discussed here; the list can then be used to index the forum. When we add a new app to the list, the forum should be re-indexed. Ideally 'aliases' for the names should also be possible, i.e. EN, UR, CT etc.
- Some other automatic word correlation among posts?
- When creating a post, before publishing (i.e. there could be some kind of saved pre-publish form), getting a list of "suggested related posts" that one can select to include as links below the post.

Alternatively one could be prompted to add a tag with the name of the software into a field on the posting form, and as one types, the list of already mentioned software could be activated to recognise the tag (this way typing mistakes could be avoided that would create duplicates), so one could just select a tag from the list (or add a new one). Once a tag would be selected, the post could be related to existing posts with that keyword.

I would love to see OutlinerSoftware work with Tapatalk: http://www.tapatalk.com/ . I love Tapatalk on my new Nexus 7.

Badge notifications for new messages to topics that have been posted in. (Most new forums are doing this.)
Google alert style for keywords. (If that's not possible, popular search key words could also work.)

Searching within a search...a hierarchal search: Often an initial search displays too many posts. It would be nice if one could search within those posts using another search term.

My request is pretty basic:
The number of pages displayed at the top and bottom of each webpage should be extended past 3 - to at least 9.
Currently it shows 1 2 3 > Last. If you click on the number hyperlink you get up to 5 pages at a time. This makes browsing longer threads rather tiresome.
I'd prefer something consistent with more page links displayed so you can jump directly to particular pages more easily.
Thanks
Jack

I will plan to increase the number of page links for a thread as that should be a simple change.
One trick in the meantime - if you are using the Clearly browser extension for Firefox or Chrome, and you turn it on for the first page of a topic thread, you can read all the pages of the topic in one clean page. Clearly is made by Evernote, and provides a button to clip the viewed page to Evernote, but as far as I know you don't have to use Evernote to use Clearly.

Encourage all posters to be brief and to the point. I have noticed that recently many post are long-winded and, in part, irrelevant to the issue at hand. Brevity and relevance, please.

Any votes for a post length limit?

That's a little bit like reducing freedom of speech for everyone because of one or two extremists who abuse that right. Limiting the post length would still allow someone to post the same amount of words but in multiple consecutive posts, which is even worse. So then we would need to consider limiting the ability to post multiple consecutive posts etc., so where would it all end?

Another suggestion: the ability to save interesting posts in one's own personal area for future reference (Favourites). Then perhaps the software could track which are the most saved items and display them publicly as the most highly rated posts for everyone's benefit.

I like Dr Andus suggestion; I also think that it would be good to have access to all of one's post under one's profile.
So this brings up a much more basic suggestion: direct control over one's profile, i.e. change of password, display name etc.

Hi.
First of all: Thanks to Chris a) for hosting the forum and b) for the offer to improve the forum. And c) for the clear reaction to Foolness/Fredy.
What I'd like to see
a) the ability to edit posts (one wrote)
b) the ability to insert screenshots or other images
c) more posts on the Topics page (and more than 1-3 and "Last" entries)
What I'd rather not have is a restriction in the length of posts (though I love posts that are short and to the point, but sometimes a post has to be a bit extensive - and no, Foolness/Fredy, I am not speaking of yours).

Note - if you click "My Account" under your name in the left bar when logged in, you can change your password, display name, etc.

Chris.
May I add another feature I'd like to see: the ability to filter out postings of particular members (and to turn the filter off again).
Thanks, Franz

I would suggest we develop a protocol for dealing with trolls. 1) How to identify a troll; 2) How to deal with trolls; 3) how to protect freedom of speech; 4) how to protect members against accusations of trolling.
The wikipedia entry does a reasonable job of defining trolling:
