Cassius kindly sent me a seven page NoteMap outline to play with.

THE NOTEMAP OUTLINE:
- had mostly numerical para numbering (1, 1.1, 1.2, 1.2.1 and so on).
- max no. of levels - 4
- normal and italic font styles
- mostly single font Times New Roman
- multicoloured text
- Notemap version I used - 2.1.011

SAVE AS RTF:
- Opened in Word 2007 (12.0.4518.1014)
- Flawless transfer of all outline elements summarised above.  Apart from some small spacing & indent layout issues, indistinguishable from original Notemap file.

SEND TO MICROSOFT WORD
- Opened in Word 2007
- Some numbering formatting errors (see below)
- Font style elements transferred accurately

In the second method, Word placed numbering against some paragraphs which were not numbered in the original NoteMap outline.  These can be backed-out fairly quickly and the document will renumber correctly. However, you shouldn’t have to search for this.  The RTF document had no such problem.

SUMMARY:  The NoteMap to Word 2007 route is viable - but use the SAVE AS RTF method, not the direct Send to Word approach.  Cassius’ original observations are still accurate.

I think NoteMap remains very useful (unique?) in handling large slabs of multi-level formatted text in a traditional outline design.  I still use it occasionally for drafting reports.
